Man allegedly injected with petrol and acid by police dies in Uttar Pradesh

In a case of alleged police brutality, a man who died on Friday morning has, in a declaration to the media, accused cops in the western UP district of Etah of injecting him with acid and petrol, reportedly to extract a confession from him. He made this statement on camera from his hospital bed. Balbir, the deceased, had been detained by the police along with Bani Khan and two others in connection with a murder case last month. Balbir and Bani Khan were allegedly tortured by the police in order to extract a confession from them. Later, they were sent to jail. When their health deteriorated, they were admitted to the Etah District Hospital. Balbir's failing health reportedly forced the doctors to shift him first to Agra and later to the King George Medical College in Lucknow. Four policemen have been suspended, including a Sub-Inspector in connection with Balbir's death. But the station officer who is named in Balbir's declaration is yet to face action.

A postgraduate diploma course sponsored by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and offered at IIT-Madras has been discontinued. I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level. If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy. I'm fortunate to have realised those dreams. To this day, one of my proudest achievements is captaining my country. I knew every time I wore the Three Lions shirt, I was not only following in a long line of great players, I was also representing every fan that cared passionately about their country. I'm honoured to represent England both on and off the pitch. I wouldn't have achieved what I have done today without my family. I'm grateful for my parents' sacrifice, which made me realise my dreams. I owe

The best way to do this is always to carry a pocket planner with you, and write down everything you have to do for the day. Block every single hour, even if you block an hour to hang out with friends, or to take a nap. If you think you will maximize productivity without a schedule, it won't happen. Amitabh Bachchan in Hollywood ??

In India, there is a buzz around the May release of the movie, The Great Gatsby. Hollywood is also just as excited about one of their most ambitious products. From what we have been reading, the buzz is not merely because of the lead stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, but a certain Bollywood legend, who is reportedly causing the maximum stir. Hollywood, for the first time, got a glimpse of the fabled acting prowess of Indian cinema’s biggest superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the shrewd and flamboyant Jewish gambler Meyer Wolfsheim in the film produced by Warner Bros. Big B has apparently impressed everyone, including the critics, with a single scene that marks his rather-late Hollywood debut in the film adapted from American author F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel by the same name. The other reason for the excitement around Bachchan’s character is because of the fact that this is the first time an actor outside the cultural periphery

She wrote an opinion piece, titled "My Medical Choice," explaining that she underwent the breast removal procedure because she has a mutated BRCA1 gene known to raise a woman's risk of breast and ovarian cancers. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes work in the body to keep DNA stable and to make sure cells don't grow out of control, according to the National Cancer Institute. But certain mutations of these genes can dramatically raise cancer risk. Jolie, 37, explained her risks from BRCA1 in the piece: My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman. Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average. Jolie began the process on F

Bollywood's Sanjay Dutt set for jail after court rejects review

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt is set to go to prison next week after India's Supreme Court on Friday rejected a petition seeking a review of his earlier jail sentence for firearms offences during the Mumbai blasts 20 years ago. Dutt, popular for his role as a do-good gangster in the "Munnabhai" films, was sentenced to six years jail in 2007 for acquiring illegal weapons from men convicted for the 1993 attacks that killed 257 people. He served 18 months but has been out on bail ever since, fighting the conviction. In March, the Supreme Court reduced the 53- year-old actor's sentence to five years and ordered him back to jail, but in April the court gave the actor four extra weeks of freedom to finish some of his Bollywood films. The court's rejection of the petition means the actor must now turn himself into custody on May 16 to serve the rest of his sentence. "Now his only remedy is to file a curative petition, which w

Manchester United gives fitting send-off to Sir Alex Ferguson

Pakistan election: Nawaz Sharif set for victory

Former Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif has claimed victory in general elections. Projections based on partial results suggest a big lead for Mr Sharif's Muslim League (PML-N) party. Saturday's election saw a large turnout and should pave the way for the country's first transition from one elected government to another. The governing Pakistan People's Party has lost many seats. It was one of several secular parties unable to campaign freely due to Taliban attacks. Most of the remaining PPP seats look likely to be in its heartland of Sindh province. The poll was generally seen as having passed off successfully, but violence on Saturday claimed at least 24 lives. An election commission spokesman said turnout had been around 60%. In 2008 it was 44%. 'Thank Allah' Official results are coming in slowly, but projections put Mr Sharif's party ahead in more than 100 of the 272 directly elected parliamentary seats. It appears tha
