JEE 2014: No Change In Percentile System /Exam Pattern

There will be no changes in the percentile system criteria for the  JEE Advanced 2014  examination. At the meeting held on August 25, 2013, the members of the  Joint Admission Board (JAB)  jointly resolved to continue with the controversial criteria, the cause of legal petitions which are still sub judice. The JAB meeting was held with an intention to review the eligibility norms, the exam date and the exam format for the  JEE 2014  examination. JEE 2013: JEE 2013 was the first two tier common exam for admissions to the engineering courses across the country.  JEE Main  2013, the first stage was for admissions to the NITs, CFTIs and SFTIs as well as the step to qualifying for JEE Advanced. JEE advanced was the second stage in the examination for admissions to the IITs and ISM Dhanbad. Students who qualified for  JEE Advanced  2013 had to also feature amongst the top-20 percentile scorers in Class XII exams of their respective boards to be eligible for admissions to the IITs.

IIT-JEE 2014: Students confused over top 20 percentile rule

Image
Students preparing for JEE 2014 may have to wait until September 15 to find out whether the top 20 percentile rule for boards will be applicable. JEE is the entrance exam students need to sit for to get into the Indian Institutes of Technology as well as the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. Other institutes, such as the NITs, also accept JEE. The IITs had stated that only students who were in the top 20 percentile of their board would be able to sit for JEE. This had led to controversy as  some boards are perceived to be more difficult than others . The IIT Council has not stated whether students who have passed their JEE (Advanced) will also need to be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards. A meeting among the Joint Admission Board of IITs was held on August 25. There was no official statement made regarding the top 20 percentile rule. The next meeting will be held on September 15 at Kharagpur. It is expected that the top 20 percentile rule will be discusse

Facts about IIT-JEE 2013

The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for the IITs now states that only the top 20 percentiles from each state board shall be eligible to sit for the exam from 2013. This means that students will have to change the pattern in which they study for the exams. While some reports have claimed that the changes will see a boom in coaching institutes, we list four facts that all students sitting for IIT-JEE 2013 should be aware of. The new rules also state that students who qualify to sit for the exam in 2013 will have to sit for a main paper and advanced paper. While critics state that the plan has not been thought out well, it seems like students have little choice but to take note of the changes. 1. Students from boards where marking is stricter may be penalised The top 20 percentile of states differ depending on the how strictly marks are awarded. A student from Meghalaya scoring 49 percent and a student from Andhra Pradesh scoring 87 percent are both in the 20th percentiles in their resp

IIT grads plead Google to name Android version Lassi

Image
Google has depended on sweets when it comes to naming the various versions of its  Android  mobile operating system. With it naming the next version KitKat after a popular confectionery brand, some Indians now believe the next update could be named after one of the two popular Indian desserts. If the efforts of these groups bear fruit, the next update for our Android phones may well be called Ladoo or Lassi! A group of students from IIT-Kharagpur have written an open letter to Google's Android boss Sundar Pichai, requesting the internet giant to name the next OS version as Lassi. In their letter, the students of IIT Kharagpur (which also happens to be Pichai's alma mater) have written: "We would like to suggest that the very next version of Android be named on one of the most popular Indian dessert, Lassi. Lassi, the humble Indian sweetened yogurt based drink, is a traditional chilled beverage of India served with an assortment of flavourings. Lassi symbolizes the pu

IIT-Madras is attempting to cover up irregularities

A group of political leaders on Thursday alleged that the appeal filed by IIT-Madras in the Madras High Court for a stay on the CBI enquiry ordered by a single judge was an attempt to keep its irregularities in recruitment under wraps.  The High Court had in July ordered a CBI probe into the correctness of the appointments made in the institute from 1995 to September 26, 2000, following writ petitions by Vasantha Kandasamy, an associate professor at IIT-M, who was not promoted for several years. At a press conference, here, the leaders alleged that they had received several alerts that IIT- M officials were dodging the enquiry. They feared that evidence might be sought to be destroyed. M.H. Jawahirullah of the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi said, “The government spends at least Rs. 30 lakh of public money on every IITian.  Many scheduled caste candidates and Muslims with good academic credentials have not been promoted or even considered for promotion, while many others with infer

CBI probe into IIT-Madras appointments stayed

A single judge verdict ordering CBI probe into the appointment of lecturers at the IIT-Madras from 1995 to 2000, was stayed by a division bench of the court on Friday.  In his order on July 25, Justice S Nagamuthu had asked the CBI to probe the correctness and legality of the appointments made at IIT-Madras from 1995 to September 26, 2000.  The first bench comprising acting Chief Justice R K Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan issued the interim order of stay on writ appeals filed by the IIT-M administration against the single judge order.  The matter relates to the writ petition filed 15 years ago by a woman faculty of the IIT-M, alleging case-based harassment and denial of due promotion due to extraneous reasons.  In her petition, Dr W B Vasantha, who was appointed lecturer in the mathematics department of IIT-M on August 19, 1988, said that despite her higher qualifications and researches, she was denied promotion as an associate professor in 1995 and as professor in 1996.  In hi

IIT directors reject Kakodkar model for financial autonomy

Arguing that IITs are not just teaching institutes, IIT directors have suggested that the institutes continue to be funded considerably and be treated as 'strategic assets of the nation'. Disagreeing with nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar's recommendations to reduce the IITs' dependence on the government for funding — aimed at ushering in greater financial autonomy to these institutes — IIT directors have told the HRD ministry that such a model will "strongly constrain the future growth of the IITs". Arguing that IITs are not just teaching institutes, IIT directors have suggested that the institutes continue to be funded considerably and in fact be treated as "strategic assets of the nation". To be taken up at the IIT council meeting slated for September 16, this view of IIT directors on the Kakodakar Committee's recommendations on governance, autonomy and finances says that "the proposed model is not consistent with the funding patte

Count yourself… Those who are thinking that it's impossible to crack  JEE  in 5 months here is a short, true story about a boy who was able to crack  JEE  by preparing sincerely for 3 months itself. There was a boy named Anirudh who woke up on a day when  IITJEE  forms were out. It was November.Anirudh was regretting about the time he wasted. He was not at all prepared for  JEE .Not even the basics. But the positive thing about Anirudh was that he never gave up and said to himself that "there is no gain without pain". I will crack  JEE  in 4 months of preparations. You won't believe guys he kept his mind on cracking  JEE  in 3 and a half month and worked sincerely for the exam. He studied 10 to 12 hours daily and increased it to 12 to 13 hours after January. He even studied board exam portion too since he had to answer his boards in the same year.
