IIT-Kanpur awards 11 faculty members

The Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur celebrated Teachers' Day on Thursday by felicitating 11 faculty members of the institute who have completed 25 years of their service in the institute. Also, three professors were given the prestigious 'Distinguished Teacher Award-2013'. Director, IIT-Kanpur, Prof Indranil Manna gave the distinguished teacher award to Prof Gurumurthy Neelakanatan of department of humanities, Prof Raghubir Sharan and Prof Aloke Dutta of department of electrical engineering. Workshop in IIT, BHU begins today

Department of pharmaceutics, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is organising a two-day seminar cum workshop on 'Concepts and Applications of Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Modelling' from today at Gandhi Technology Alumni Centre (IIT-Guest House). According to organising secretary department of Pharmaceutics, IIT-BHU, Prof Sanjay Singh, around 45 delegates across the country have registered to participate in the workshop. The seminar cum workshop will focus on fundamental concepts of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modelling and its application in drug development. Lectures and deliberations by Dr Mallika Lala, Arun Kumar Singh, Dr Jawahar Lal and other experts will also be held on the occasion.

Talent reward examination for IIT-JEE aspirants

FIITJEE, an institute providing coaching mainly for IIT-JEE examination, will conduct a nationwide ‘Talent Reward Examination’ on October 20 for students from Classes V to XII. The examination will help students gauge where they stand in competition with other students as they gear up for the Joint Entrance Examination for entrance to India’s top engineering colleges, a news release from FIITJEE said here on Tuesday. Based on the performance in the exam, students will get to know their Rank Potential Index (RPI) for JEE (Advanced) and Success Potential Index (SPI) for other competitive examinations. This will help students know their chances of success in securing a seat in the IITs and bridge their gap in the preparation for JEE-2014 and other competitive examinations, the release said.  The fee for the Talent Reward Examination, to be held in various categories for Classes V to XII, will range from Rs 300 to Rs 600. IIT Delhi enters CIMA Global Business Challenge 2013

Four Indian students from The Ambers- Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, reached the global finals of CIMA’s Global Business Challenge 2013. The competition took place in Johannesburg, South Africa. The team represented the country at the global final and stood sixth among 96 participants from 24 countries that competed for the chance to be 2013 champions. The CIMA Global Business Challenge is an international business competition designed to bring out the best in the young business leaders of tomorrow. This is the first time that an Indian university managed secured a position amongst the top six qualifying teams. 24 teams started out on Day 1 and only 6 qualified to round 2 to go through to the final stage of the challenge. The students of IIT Delhi , Sahebjeet Singh Arora and Deepanshu Agarwal are in their third year, pursuing chemical engineering, while Vaibhav Yadav and Surabhi Yadav are in their fourth year in biotechnology and biochemical engineering. IIT-BHU secures All-India 2nd rank in Google marketing contest

A team of students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) secured an All-India second rank ( AIR) in the Google Online Marketing Challenge-2013. The team bagged 4th position in Asia and Pacific region and secured 22nd position at world level. Prof PK Mishra of department of chemical engineering was the teacher incharge of the team. According to Mishra, the team comprised of Pusphendra Dwivedi, captain of the team, K Vishal Kumar, Divya Bhargavi, Prateek Hundekar and Santosh Iniyavan from IIT-BHU. Google Online Marketing Challenge was organised by Google. The IIT-BHU team were the regional Adword finalist in Asia and Pacific region. More than 2,200 teams comprising of 12,000 students from 80 countries participated in this competition this year.

Minister pitches for IIT in Bengaluru

Two days after the Union Minister for Human Reso­u­rce Development, Dr. M.M. Pallam Raju rejected the state’s demand for an IIT , the state higher education minister R.V.  Desh­pande announced that the state will do its best to bring an IIT to the state. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Deshpande said that the issue will be discussed in the state cabinet and the proposal will be forwarded to the union government again. “I am confident that the union government will sanction an IIT to the state in the present five year plan itself,” he said. Reacting to the VTU Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr H. Maheshappa’s statement that AICTE should stop giving permission to new engineering colleges for the next five years, Mr. Deshpande informed that he is against any such idea. “We need more engineering colleges as well as general degree colleges. Priyadarshini engineering students to participate in IIT Bombay Techfest 2013-14

The electronics & Mechanical engineering branch of Priyadarshini  college students will be taking part  in IIT Bombay’s annual Techfest-2013-14. The team comprising of 25 students in 4 groups will participate  in a Prestigious  Grid Warrior  competition . The students have created an  Autonomous Bot  which will work  on a task assigned to the team in the completion. The Autonomous BOT has to find the correct coordinates and navigate the Bot on a Grid by the principles of line on the Arena. The task is done on a specified grid on an Arena. The IIT Bombay Techfest is considered to be a very prestigious and competitive event with participation from all over India. IIT professors call cell tower rules safe, doctors advise caution

Twenty-five professors and researchers mainly from the IITs working in the field of telecommunications have written an open letter to the Centre, stating that the country's cellphone tower radiation norms are among the safest in the world and there is no reason to change them. But doctors and social activists say that cell tower radiation causes a range of health problems, from headache to memory loss to cancer, and demand stringent monitoring of radiation levels. In their letter to the Union ministry of communications and information technology, headed by Kapil Sibal , the professors have urged the government to avoid making ad-hoc decisions on restricting cell tower locations-so long as these meet existing guidelines-to avoid creating panic among people. The letter says there is "no further knowledge available" to warrant a change in cell tower safety recommendations. Placements no worry at non-IIT engineering colleges

K Gopi Krishna is this year's poster boy at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal. Social networking site Facebook offered the computer science student an annual salary of $135,000 (approximately Rs 84.6 lakh) during the ongoing placements - a record for the institute. Last year, the highest offer at the institute - at $100,000 (then Rs 60 lakh) - came from Microsoft.  The story is similar across other leading non-IIT engineering institutes in the country, where initial apprehensions of a dull placement season are slowly being put to rest. Campus hiring for most engineering colleges begin in mid-August while at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) it begins in December.  "There were apprehensions before the placements started, but so far,  the situation  for the Class of 2014 is good.
