Japan to provide Rs. 1958 crore assistance to IIT Hyderabad

Japan will extend an assistance of Rs. 1,958 crore (30.7 billion yen) to India for Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad and investment promotion programme in Tamil Nadu. An agreement to this effect was exchanged in New Delhi on Tuesday between Rajesh Khullar, Joint Secretary in the Finance Ministry and Takeshi Yagi, Ambassador of Japan to India, according to a statement issued by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The statement said an amount of Rs. 1,129 crore will be provided for the second phase of campus development at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad. Further, JICA will provide Rs. 829 crore for the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Programme. The objective of the Tamil Nadu programme is to support policy implementation to improve the investment climate in Tamil Nadu, thereby easing business hurdles for foreign investors. A team of three individuals originally from  Indian Institute of Technology Bombay ((IIT-B) have come together to form an angel network Lead Angels (www.leadangels.in). The team includes C Amarnath who retired as a professor of Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay, Sushanto Mitra, Ex-CEO of Society for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, IIT-B and a recent IIT-B graduate, Bipin Kumar. This network had its first meeting recently in Mumbai where companies presented their business plans to a group of investors and mentors. IIT-Madras, IIT-Kanpur, IISc to offer PhD scholarship programme with University of Melbourne

Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, IIT-Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore will partner with the University of Melbourne to offer a new joint PhD scholarship programme from 2014. The Melbourne-India Postgraduate Program will provide Aus$3 million as scholarship to 16 PhD scholars and associated support for research exchanges over the next three years. "As a university we are committed to supporting research that has global impact and benefits, and this programme will go a long way to help further this goal," a press release shared ahead of the launch of the programme quoted Glyn Davis, vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne, as saying. IIT-H smart campus to be ready by next academic year

A smart campus that would be self sufficient in energy and water conservation would come up at the newly being established campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H). The campus would be ready by next academic year and the classes would be held on the new campus. Modular model “Construction is going in a modular model and as it would be taken up zone-wise the academic activity will not be affected. These buildings will have unique features such as radiant cooling systems, which provide thermal comfort while minimizing power consumption, have been incorporated in the design of buildings. IIT 'biggies' gobble up 200 affordable schools

If you have just moved to Hyderabad and looking for an affordable school near your locality, chances are that it has shut down and an expensive school that runs exclusive IIT training courses for students from an early age has sprung up in its place. In the past year-and-a-half, at least 200 "affordable" private schools have been gobbled up by two chains of educational institutes that provide courses for competitive exams from junior level. About 2,000 such institutes have mushroomed in the same period across the twin cities. These schools, which lure parents with dreams of seeing their children becoming future IITians with fat salaries have left officials very worried. "Parents should have a choice about which school they want to send their wards, but that is seldom the case now," A Subba Reddy, a district education officer told STOI. IIT-D to set up research academy in Mauritius

Expansion and improving its global image are twin goals Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is currently focused on. Thirty-eighth amongst 300 institutions in Asia with its electrical and mechanical engineering departments topping the QS World University Rankings, the institution has constituted a four-member committee to work towards improving its global position. IIT is also setting up a research academy in Mauritius by the end of the current academic year. With land having been allocated for its two extension campuses in Sonepat and Jhajjar, it's also planning a number of centres and executive programmes there. Speaking about expansion plans and setting its first footprint abroad, IIT Delhi director R K Shevgaonkar said it has formalized setting up an IIT Delhi Research Academy in collaboration with the Mauritius government. IIT-Kanpur awards 7 ex-students

On Friday evening, IIT-Kanpur conferred distinguished alumnus award upon on seven ex-students. The award was received by four ex-students (out of seven) present during the function. Kamal K Sharma of 1969 batch, Amit Gupta of 2000 batch, Abhay Singhal and Naveen Tiwari of 2001 batch were present to receive the award while Bhadresh K Shah of 1975 batch, Sumant Singh of 1978 batch and Keshav K Pingali of 1979 batch were not present. On this very occasion, the Satyendra K Dubey Memorial Award was given to ex-student of IIT-Delhi who is presently working as professor of Quantiative Methods and Information Systems in IIM-Bangalore, Trilochan Sastry. The Satyendra K Dubey Memorial Award was instituted by IIT-Kanpur in the memory of Satyendra K Dubey, a passout of IIT-Kanpur in 1994 and his exemplery life and supreme sacrifice. The awards were given away by Director, IIT-Kanpur, Prof Indranil Manna in the outreach auditorium.
